Police in Buenos Aires reported that officers were initially dispatched to the hotel following complaints about an "aggressive man" who appeared to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Upon their arrival, authorities learnt that a loud noise had been heard in an interior courtyard. Shortly thereafter, they found the body.

Alberto Crescenti, the director of emergency medical services, informed local media that Payne had sustained "serious injuries" and confirmed that an autopsy will be performed.
