Adesua Etomi talks about the importance of friendship in marriage

The relationship between Nigerian actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington and singer Banky W has been a source of admiration and inspiration for many fans. Despite their public display of affection, Adesua emphasizes that their strong bond didn’t magically happen but was a result of hard work.

In a revelation during a church service at Waterbrooks Church in Lagos on a Sunday, Adesua shared that they had built a deep friendship over the course of their relationship, which has played a significant role in the growth of their marriage.

She also disclosed that she had initially placed Banky W in the friend zone for over a year.

“I friend-zoned him for two reasons. One, I wasn’t sure that I had heard from God about whether this person was my person. Three reasons. Second, marrying Banky W. I was like, ‘my life on my own is chaotic enough, I would now marry Banky? No, no, no’.”

“And then thirdly, just trying to at least have a friendship. And I honestly believe that the friendship we laid over a year and a half ago has played a very big role in how our relationship is today,” she said.

Adesua explained that should they put romance aside, Banky W still remains her person and best friend regardless.

“I would like to say that friendship plays a very big role in laying the foundation of your relationship…Banky W is my guy. I mean if you take away romance and s3x and everything that makes a marriage, he would still be my guy. Banky is my best friend,” she noted.

The pair tied the knot at a decorated wedding ceremony in 2017. In February 2021, the couple revealed that they had welcomed a baby in January that year.

After making their pregnancy announcement, Adesua Etomi-Wellington and Banky W candidly shared their challenging journey to parenthood. In April 2021, Adesua disclosed that she had experienced the heartbreak of a miscarriage despite initially being pregnant with twins.

During the same month, Banky W opened up about their struggles, revealing that he and his wife had encountered significant difficulties conceiving and had undergone three unsuccessful attempts at in vitro fertilization (IVF). In an interview where he openly discussed their experiences, the singer explained that they had seriously considered surrogacy as a viable option to fulfill their desire for a child.

Throughout this challenging process, they had to endure hurtful comments and mockery from some individuals on social media who were insensitive to their plight, despite the fact that they had been married for a few years without having children.
